Imagine for a minute that you could build your neighborhood from the ground up – and you have to start with how you move around it! Where would you start? With walking your dog? Floating to your friend’s house on a lazy river? Catching the next roller coaster to work? And what would the neighborhood around that lazy river look like?
At WakeUP, we want options for everyone – to live and move in the way that works for them. How we move around determines how we build our places, and how we build our places determines how we move around. We have no idea how to untangle those two, but we do know that Wake County residents want – and many of us need – to have a choice.
You won’t hear us calling for a Wake County Department of Lazy River Transportation, but we do want to make sure that each Wake County resident has transportation that works for them – and meets their budget, their age, and their physical abilities.
We have a chance today to avoid the traffic congestion that’s choking other U.S. cities by making sure we keep all options open, and WakeUP Wake County is working to keep those options on the table for everyone.

We need help saving RDUForest. Old Reedy Creek road is the west entrance into Umstead State Park. We need a NEPA or SEPARATE review process of RDUAA lease to Wake Stone Corporation. The Odd Fellows parcel has a history of being used for recreational purposes by the general public. This land should be conserved and not clear cut for a rock quarry. The East Coast Greenway thru Umstead State Park will be negatively impacted by the expansion of this quarry. By both Air quality, water quality and increased flooding downstream impacting the 4 M taxpayer funded Crabtree Creek West Trail. Will Wake-up Wake County get involved and help reverse this disastrous decision?
I am so proud of Raleigh and Wake County as I see both governments reaching out and being responsive. One need I see is for more services for those with disabilities to ride on public transportation or for low cost transportation for appointments or shopping. Their tax payments should provide some more options for them too. I recognize the tension between public and private businesses but if disabled folks had some options…but perhaps there could be a limited number of “rides” a month. If I had a magic wand that is one thing I would love to see added to our transportation system.
