NC House Bill 1224 Threatens Transit and Education

Although the legislative short session is nearing the close, a new bill that has been introduced poses a serious threat to counties across the state.  House Bill 1224 aims to cap the total sales tax that a county government can collect at 2.5%, and puts limits on what that money can be used for at the local level.  The bill would force counties to choose between collecting taxes for education or for transit, making it impossible to fund both through a sales tax.

For counties like Wake and Mecklenburg, who are already considering both sales tax increases, this bill would be devastating.  And WakeUP isn’t the only organization to see this.  The NC League of Municipalities, NC County Commissioners Association, and the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce are all publicly opposing the bill as well.  WakeUP is asking all its members to contact your legislators to ask them to SPEAK OUT and VOTE AGAINST House Bill 1224.  You can read more about the bill here.
