The City of Raleigh is Looking to Improve Floodplain Regulations

The City of Raleigh is looking at options to improve our floodplain regulations. This will help reduce flooding impacts and safety concerns in our communities, especially in areas near creeks that are expected to flood during large rain storms.

A stakeholder group has been selected to review potential regulation changes and exemptions during a series of meetings over the next 4-6 months. Residents are invited to attend.

The City is looking to change the following:

  • What can be built in the floodplain.
  • How much impervious surface (i.e. buildings, driveways) can be in the floodplain.
  • Access to structures when it floods.
  • Flood study requirements.

The upcoming Meeting will be held on Thursday, April 11, 2019, from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m., at One Exchange Plaza (Room 809) in Raleigh, NC.

Residents with questions are invited to contact the City of Raleigh’s Stormwater Management Division, either by email at RaleighStormwater@raleighnc.gov or by phone at 919-996-3940.

In addition to this, the next meeting of Raleigh’s Stormwater Management Advisory Commission (SMAC) is coming up on May 2, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. at the Raleigh Municipal Building. To view the agenda for this meeting, click here.
