North Carolina will soon be the 9th largest state in the US. We are moving upwards in population with a current census of 9,850,000 — only 48,000 fewer than Michigan (read more). The Triangle is experiencing much of this growth, and with it comes the need for more development. Towns such as Cary, Apex and Raleigh are approving new developments, especially apartments and town homes which create denser development. Apex recently OK’d the building of 368 new town houses, single-family detached homes and custom-built homes. This project proves to be the towns’ largest approved project in the past year and therefore carries concern from the citizens about development strain on Jordan Lake and increased traffic (read more). Likewise, Cary has approved 1,157 single-family homes and 361 multi-family homes for the upcoming year. The town is adopting new regulations and experimenting with various shopping centers to view how development is affecting growth (read more). Although some citizens are concerned, others recognize the need for this type of development and the demand for it. Denser development can save open space, reduce utility infrastructure and create walkability if they are well planned. These changes continues to reinforce WakeUP Wake County’s organizational importance in providing a voice for citizens in good growth.
