WAKEUP WAKE COUNTY RECEIVES GRANT AWARDS FROM LOCAL FOUNDATIONS

Three prominent North Carolina-based foundations have awarded grants to WakeUP Wake County for its 2012 work advancing public transit, effective land use planning, and clean drinking water. WakeUP is very pleased to be receiving $25,000 from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, $15,000 from the Triangle Community Foundation, and $20,000 from the Raleigh-based Beehive Collective.

“WakeUP is honored and very fortunate to receive support from these significant North Carolina foundations. Because Wake County continues to be among the nation’s fastest growing regions, we must take action now to ensure a sustainable future for our communities. These grants will enable WakeUP to be an effective citizen voice for needed good growth planning,” said Karen Rindge, Executive Director of WakeUP. The grants will be used for public education and engaging citizens in the public policy issues of expanding regional transit in the Triangle, ensuring land use planning that promotes vibrant neighborhoods and transit-oriented development, and ensuring a clean and adequate drinking water supply.

The Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation has made grants throughout North Carolina, giving special emphasis to community economic development, the environment, civic engagement, pre-collegiate education, and social justice and equity.

The Triangle Community Foundation’s Community Grantmaking Program provides funding to Triangle-based organizations working on civic engagement and youth leadership and development.

The Beehive Collective is a group of about 40 people in Raleigh that pool talents and resources to raise meaningful amounts of money for causes they care about. The theme of the 2011 award was meeting the “triple bottom line of sustainability — People, Planet, Prosperity”.

WakeUP Wake County is a non-profit 501(c)(3) citizen organization, and is the citizens’ voice for good growth planning and sustainable communities, advancing a higher quality of life for all.
