Thank you for supporting WakeUP!

Everyone at WakeUP Wake County wants to thank those who supported us during our 2018 End of the Year appeal. We are please to announce that we met our goal of $20,000 and Jim Goodmon’s challenge! In 2019, WakeUP will receive a match in your donations from Jim Goodmon, CEO, Capitol Broadcasting Company.

There are many wonderful things planned for 2019! WakeUP will be kicking off our WakeUP After 5 and other regular events to talk about what is going on in the county. WakeUP will be holding an Education Forum to highlight the Value of Public Education. We will be holding a Lunch and Learn series to support the implementation of the Wake County Affordable Housing Plan and we will be holding events focused on the Value of Water in October.

Vibrant, sustainable communities don’t emerge on their own. It takes a Big Vision and Local Action to create results.

WakeUP’s Big Vision imagines communities enjoying a variety of housing options, people taking public transit, riding bikes, and walking safely along streets bordered with businesses, restaurants, and homes, good schools cultivating our future leaders, and a dependable clean water supply. WakeUP’s Local Action can turn this vision into reality.

If you share this Big Vision, please consider donating $50, $100 or $250 to help us make YOUR vision a reality. Your gift will be DOUBLED thanks to a $20,000 matching challenge offered by community visionary, Jim Goodmon, CEO, Capitol Broadcasting Company.

As a successful businessman and community leader, Jim understands important things start with a big vision but only happen with tenacious effort. WakeUP remains committed to speaking UP for a better tomorrow in our high growth county, advocating for best-practices learned from across the nation.

As the 2nd fastest growing county in America, housing costs have gone up. The elderly and service workers have been especially impacted, and WakeUP shares Wake County’s Big Vision for expanding affordable housing. WakeUP urged increased funding for affordable housing, is convening advocates to support implementing the county affordable housing plan and is speaking UP for more housing options like accessory dwelling units (ADUs).

Since 2006, WakeUP has been the non-partisan voice for our public schools. This year we helped persuade the Wake County Commission to increase funding well beyond the county manager’s recommendation. We worked for passage of the school bond as the most cost-effective way to build and renovate schools for our growing student population. We also worked with the school system to develop better site designs to encourage safer walking and biking to schools.

Our community shares the Big Vision of a much-expanded public transportation system. WakeUP is the local voice urging citizen participation and timely implementation of the Wake Transit Plan. Our staff have been appointed to transit advisory boards developing this vision to connect housing and transit, expand economic opportunity, and create healthier communities.

Ensuring our growing county has clean water is the Big Vision that motivates WakeUP to act. This year WakeUP created a public-private Imagine a Day without Water educational event highlighting the value of water. This and other engagement are motivating municipalities to consider green stormwater infrastructure and the importance of dedicated water and sewer fees as ways to improve water quality as we grow.

Being an advocate for a sustainable future at a time of rapid growth and development isn’t always easy. WakeUP speaks up for policies and funding that aren’t always politically popular, and frankly, change is sometimes hard. But WakeUP always returns to the Big Vision.

For more than a decade, WakeUP has been the voice of engaged citizens like you. Building coalitions, sitting in on school board meetings and county commissioner planning sessions, pouring over infrastructure proposals, listening to experts, talking to elected officials, and hosting non-partisan candidate forums.

WakeUP was honored to be named one of NC’s “Influencers” by the News&Observer this year.Help us continue to influence public policy by making a year-end tax-deductible contribution to WakeUP today.

Your gift will be DOUBLED thanks to the generous matching donation of Jim Goodmon.

Your $50 will be $100, your $250 will be $500!
