On May 9, 2018 Wake County manager, David Ellis, presented the FY19 County Budget proposal. Many aspects of the budget support quality of life in Wake County and aligns with many of WakeUP’s core values. Some highlights include a one-cent tax increase to create an affordable housing program that will implement the affordable housing plan, adopted in 2017, and fund production and preservation of housing. To ensure a clean and abundant water supply for the future, a One Water study will be conducted to create a snapshot of water use throughout the county.
The county is supporting childhood development through the Wake County SmartStart preschool program by funding 400 additional seats to eliminate the existing waitlist. The county proposed a $30 million increase in school funding. This would bring the county’s total annual investment in the school district to a record-setting $461 million. It would also provide WCPSS with per-pupil funding of $2,618 – the highest amount ever. However, it is less than the $58 million requested by the school board. It appears that additional funds will be needed to meet the level of service currently provided by the school system.
The Commissioners will hold two public hearings on the proposed budget on May 21st.
