In response to current state legislation that would repeal the Jordan Lake rules, WakeUP Wake County is holding outreach events and communicating with local elected officials. The goal is to defeat Senate Bill 515, which would end the current Jordan Lake clean-up process. On Friday, May 24 a press conference was held at Jordan Lake, coordinated by WakeUP Wake County, the NC Sierra Club, Haw River Assembly, and Environment North Carolina. The media heard from local governments that get their drinking water from the lake. WakeUP and the NC Sierra Club co-hosted a WakeUP After 5 event on May 30at a local restaurant in Cary to engage the public and give them an opportunity to ask questions of NC Representative Tom Murry, NC Senator Tamera Barringer, Morrisville Pro Tem Liz Johnson, Holly Springs Mayor Dick Sears, and Peter Raabe of American Rivers. All say they oppose S 515. WakeUP is continuing the effort to solidify support against this bill by addressing the Wake County Board of Commissioners to ask them to speak out against the bill. We urge you to contact your NC Representative to ask him/her to defeat S 515.
