Interactive Workshop on ADUs 2025

50+ People Attend Interactive Workshop on ADUs (Accessory Dwelling Units)

October 9, 2025 at AIA NC Center for Architecture + Design, Raleigh

WakeUP Wake County and RaleighForward offered a free interactive workshop titled ADUs by the Numbers: A Data-Driven Look at the Future of Housing. The City of Raleigh legalized ADUs about five years ago. More than 50 people joined us for an assessment of the success of the ordinance.

WakeUP Executive Director Roberta Fox and Kristin Williams, PhD presented key data, trends, and insights about ADUs in Raleigh. Dr. Williams is Founder & Principal of NineteenEleven Consulting, and she is in the process of conducting research on ADUs in our area. The audience heard up-to-date figures on permitting activity, construction trends, financing strategies, occupancy, and community impact. The event also included a Q&A session with a panel of experts and small group break-out discussions. The purpose of the event was to empower homeowners, policymakers, housing advocates, and developers with the knowledge they need to support the current success and future expansion of ADUs in our local housing landscape. Wake County is facing an affordable housing shortage, and ADUs are part of the solution.

The program was FREE and open to the public. Thank you to Board Treasurer Hattie Gawande for spearheading this effort. Our deepest appreciation to all who presented and attended!
